Meet your new best friend!
PORT’s available pets are housed in foster homes. A foster is a member of the community that is temporarily caring for the dog. If you are interested in being a foster parent, please see more here.
Benefits of Adopting a Dog from a Foster Home:
You know exactly what you’re getting. A dog in a Foster home has already lived with someone else (at least for a short amount of time). Foster parents can tell you all that they’ve learned about the dog during their time with them.
Foster dogs are more likely to have desirable home behaviors (example: housetrained, cratetrained, has lived with other animals or children).
You get to meet them in a home, where they shine the brightest! One of PORT’s main values is to shorten the amount of time a dog spends in a shelter as much as possible. Shelters, no matter how great they are run, are artificial environments that stress dogs out. High stress levels lead to behavior and medical issues that can come on very fast and often mean a dog gets unnecessarily killed in that environment. Let’s put an end to that!
Easy Step-by-Step Adoption Process
Step 1: Initial Contact
Email: Start by sending an email to rgoins@petsofohiorescueteam.org.
Step 2: Identifying the Pet
Interested in a Specific Pet: If you already have a particular pet in mind, your information will be forwarded to the foster family caring for that pet. They will contact you within 48 hours to set up a meet and greet. Please note that setting up a meet and greet does not guarantee you the pet.
Need Help Choosing: If you don't have a specific pet in mind and would like assistance, our matchmakers will email you to get to know you better and suggest some suitable options.
Step 3: Meet and Greet
Meeting the Pet: Arrange a meet and greet with the pet you are interested in.
Step 4: Adoption Options
Direct Adoption: If the meeting goes well, you can choose to adopt the pet directly from the foster parent. This involves:
Calling a PORT representative.
Completing the paperwork over your phone.
Paying through your phone at that time.
Trial Adoption: If you prefer to try the pet out for 72 hours before making a final decision, you can opt for a trial adoption. This also involves calling a PORT representative to complete the necessary steps.
